The Healing of the Two Unnamed Women

This meditation is based on a passage for October 12, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: Luke 8:40-56

Reflection and Question: The only person with a name in this story, aside from Jesus and some disciples, is the leader of the synagogue, Jairus, who comes to Jesus to ask Him to heal his dying daughter. Many people were jostling Jesus, but he detected power going out to only one. He doesn’t say that He healed her. Jesus says, as He does to others, “Your faith has made you well.” Neither the child nor the woman with the twelve-year flow of blood is named and yet both are forever associated with Jesus’ compassion and healing power. What do you learn about Jesus through these healings?

Prayer: Dearest Jesus, our Brother and Savior, Your healing of these unclean women astounds us just as much as they stunned those around You then. Whether we have the faith of the woman or the need of the child, heal us, too, we pray. Amen.
